My name is Samira and I’m a LGOIMA Business Partner at Auckland

Dear Auckland Transport,
Please provide the Waiheke ferry service database discussed in the RNZ

I just wanted to advise that we don't hold the database mentioned in the
article. The article is about a commitment made by Council.  In addition,
the Waiheke ferry is a commercial service, and we don’t hold performance
data as we do for other routes.

We do have reliability data for our contracted services and can provide
that. Are you able to clarify the interval (daily, weekly, monthly
etc.) and date range for me please?

Dear Samira

Thank you for your quick reply to my request.

> article. The article is about a commitment made by Council. In addition,
> the Waiheke ferry is a commercial service, and we don’t hold performance
> data as we do for other routes.

Is this particular database held by Auckland Council, or was it committed to being created by Auckland Council, but never created by them? Or should I make an OIA directly to Auckland Council to get this information?

> We do have reliability data for our contracted services and can provide
> that. Are you able to clarify the interval (daily, weekly, monthly
> etc.) and date range for me please?

Thank you, that would be great to get reliability data for Auckland Transport's contracted services.

I would like the original reliability data for all bus, train and ferry services, for all time, without the data being aggregated.

Could you please provide me with more information about what reliability data Auckland Transport collects for contracted services, along with the type and version of database that this information is stored in so that I can asses what information to have exported?

To answer what reliability information is collected, you could provide me with the database schema documentation (what tables exist, the names and descriptions of the database fields), or a database schema export if no database schema documentation was explicitly created.

Yours sincerely,

J Diprose

Kia ora J Diprose,

Many thanks for your previous correspondence. I refer to your below
request:

I would like the original reliability data for all bus, train and ferry
services, for all time, without the data being aggregated.

The requested information as currently framed will be very difficult to
meet without substantial collation or research. It will be around
12,000-15,000 records per day. We currently have four years of data
available (22 million rows of data), and the rest needs to be unarchived.
Unless your request is amended, we may have to refuse it under section
17(f) of the LGOIMA, which applies where the information cannot be made
available without substantial collation or research.

We can provide the data for smaller timeframes, so that you can compare
performance. e.g., a sample month in 2022 vs same month in 2019?

Please let us know before 1 November 2022 whether you are prepared to
amend your request.

Please let me know if you wish to discuss this.

Dear Samira

> We don’t hold the database mentioned in the article. The remaining
> questions will be responded to by Auckland Transport (AT).

Thank you for answering this part of the request.

I am a data engineer who works with databases on a daily basis. In my professional opinion, the number of records requested has no bearing on the difficulty of extracting data from the database.

You can provide the requested information by running a database dump command, which saves an exported version of the database, including the database schema and data. This would save you the time and effort of writing a query, which you have already offered to do.

At present I only require the four years of data that is currently available, not the archived data.

Could you please provide me with the database name and version (for example, PostgresSQL v12.1) so that I can tell you what command to run to export the database, including the database dump format. I might be able to limit the export to specific tables if you send me the database schema documentation.

Yours sincerely,

J Diprose

Kia ora J Diprose,

Many thanks for your previous correspondence.

Auckland Transport uses an industry standard relational database that
enables us to export data in whatever format is required. Unfortunately,
the database schema documentation is considered commercially
sensitive, and we won't be able to share that with you. In addition, due
to security reasons, we won't be able to accept the command from you.

The Patronage data are published on our website and are available [1]here.
This information cover patronage, punctuality and reliability of services
overall, by month and by route. In addition to this, as previously
advised, we can provide the data for smaller timeframes, so that you can
compare the performance for sample month vs the same month in another
year.

Please advise whether you are prepared to amend your request.

Please let me know if you wish to discuss this.

I am emailing to advise that we need to extend the timeframe for
communicating a decision on your request for Waiheke ferry service
database.

We have collated information and are currently consulting on its release,
however we need more time to complete our consultations. I am therefore
extending the timeframe for this request to 12 December 2022 under Section
14 (1) (b) Consultations necessary to make a decision on the request are
such that a proper response to the request can not reasonably be made
within the original time limit.

Please note this is a maximum timeframe and we will endeavour to respond
sooner if possible.

You have the right to complain to the Ombudsman about this extension.
Information about how to make a complaint is available at
[1]www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or freephone 0800 802 602.
