National Gang List- breakdown by ethnicity

Andrew Li made this Official Information request to New Zealand Police

The request was successful.

From: Andrew Li

Dear New Zealand Police,

In light of the recent threats by the Ardern government to seize assets from people who are related to or allegedly friends with gang members, there has been a great deal of public interest in the impact that this will have on different ethnic groups.

I assume that the information held by the Gang Intelligence Centre includes a field for ethnicity/racial origin/race/whatever, containing values such as 'Maori', 'NZ European', 'Asian' etc, or links to an ID table for same. As such, one assumes it should be trivial to produce the results of a query against this, either from an existing report or through a query against the database like

SELECT ethnicity,count(1) AS count_individuals FROM gang_members
GROUP BY ethnicity;

obviously modifying the table name and ethnicity field to suit. If ethnicity/racial origin/whatever is recorded as an ID value linked to another table, please provide the contents of said related table so the results can be interpreted.

If this sounds impractical or impossible to produce for some reason, please produce documentation of the schema of the database that holds Gang Intelligence Centre records regarding gang members.

Regards,
Andrew Li
