Truancy Rates NZ

JB made this Official Information request to Ministry of Education

The request was successful.

From: JB

Dear Ministry of Education,

I am writing to request a representation of truancy rates in schools in NZ since 2005. If this is not available, then the earliest possible available information would be acceptable. I would also like to have the number of school students in New Zealand for each of these years. I would also like this information to be expressed both as a whole and separately between secondary and primary school data.

I would like this information presented in graphical form (as a line graph with bars) and in a tabular form expressed as a percentage.

Yours faithfully,

JB

Tçnâ koe JB,

Thank you for your FYI request dated of 25 August 2022 requesting the
following information:

o a representation of truancy rates in schools in NZ since 2005. If this
is not available, then the earliest possible available information
would be acceptable.
o I would also like to have the number of school students in New Zealand
for each of these years. I would also like this information to be
expressed both as a whole and separately between secondary and primary
school data.
o I would like this information presented in graphical form (as a line
graph with bars) and in a tabular form expressed as a percentage.

We have considered your request under the Official Information Act 1982
(the Act).

Both the Government and the Ministry of Education recognise that regular
attendance, alongside effective teaching, has the greatest impact on young
people’s engagement, participation and achievement at school. Schools
collect and use data on attendance to identify where support is needed for
learners who may have missed a number of days to catch up on their
learning.

School attendance data is provided to the Ministry by schools, to support
ongoing initiatives to encourage akônga to participate in and re-engage
with learning. As such, ‘truancy’ is not something that is defined or
measured by the Ministry. Therefore, we are refusing your request under
section 18(e) of the Act, as the document alleged to contain the
information does not exist.

The Ministry has recorded attendance data since 2011, which is publicly
available and can be found at the following link:

We are refusing your request for the number of school students in New
Zealand since 2005, under section 18(d) of the Act, as the information you
have requested is publicly available. This is published on the Ministry’s
Education Counts website, and can be found at the following link:
[2]https://www.educationcounts.govt.nz/stat....

Thank you again for your email. You have the right to ask an Ombudsman to
review this decision. You can do this by writing to
[3][email address] or Office of the Ombudsman, PO Box 10152,
Wellington 6143.
