Evidence on the impact of cellphones in the classroom

Ben made this Official Information request to Ministry of Education

The request was partially successful.

From: Ben

Dear Ministry of Education,

I understand that the incoming government intends to prioritise banning cellphones in schools.

I would like to request under the OIA copies of:

1. Any research or other evidence as to the effect of cellphones in the classroom.

2. If known:
(a) the number of secondary schools that have rules banning cellphones in the classroom
(b) the umber of secondary schools that have rules restricting cellphones in the classroom
(c) the total number of secondary schools

3. If any previous consideration has been given to a ban on cellphones in the classroom, the papers relating to that consideration (ie ministry papers, cabinet papers, but excluding any emails or other correspondence).

For the avoidance of doubt, I do not require the names or contact details of any Ministry staff, provided the position title for that person is clear.

Yours faithfully,

Ben
