I am interested in the value and issue of of fines and levies issued to University of Auckland accommodation resident over the years of 2020-2021.

Specifically, I would like to know:

- The total value of fines issued to University of Auckland catered and self-catered accommodation residents for breach of accommodation rules in 2020 and 2021, broken down by year.

- The total value of levies issued to University of Auckland catered and self-catered accommodation residents in 2020 and 2021, broken down by year.

- The approximate number of students residing in University of Auckland catered and self-catered accommodation in 2020 and 2021, and approximate average cost of levies per student for the years of 2020 and 2021.

- Any resources or information provided to University of Auckland accommodation staff around imposing levies on residents in catered and self-catered accommodation, including any information related to distinguishing between intentional damage of property and objects by residents and general wear and tear.

Dear Ella,

 

I refer to your request of 5 July 2022.

 

Unfortunately, consultations necessary to make a decision on the request
are such that a response to the request cannot reasonably be given within
the original time limit. Accordingly, the University has extended the time
limit for your request until 16 August 2022 under section 15A(1)(b) of the
OIA. This is the new maximum time limit for the University’s response; we
will respond to your request as soon as reasonably practicable.

 

You have the right to make a complaint an Ombudsman if you are
dissatisfied with this extension.

2020 - $32,862.
2021 - $21,958.

“- The total value of levies issued to University of Auckland catered and
self-catered accommodation residents in 2020 and 2021, broken down by
year.”

2020: $20,677.92

2021: $16,476.62

“- The approximate number of students residing in University of Auckland
catered and self-catered accommodation in 2020 and 2021, and approximate
average cost of levies per student for the years of 2020 and 2021.”

2020 – 3507

2021 – 3452

“Any resources or information provided to University of Auckland
accommodation staff around imposing levies on residents in catered and
self-catered accommodation, including any information related to
distinguishing between intentional damage of property and objects by
residents and general wear and tear.”

Costs of general wear and tear are borne by the University and not
recovered through levies.
