2021 BOH grade distribution

IH made this Official Information request to University of Otago

This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for IH to read a recent response and update the status.

From: IH

Dear University of Otago,

I am making an OIA request for the grade distribution of 100, 200 and 300 level Bachelor of Oral Health (including compulsory papers e.g PUBH202, SOCI101 and MAOR102) for 2021.

This should specify how many students received each grade (A+, A, A-, etc) for each paper across 1st, 2nd and 3rd year and the specific grade percentage of the highest mark for each paper.

I am also requesting to know the number of graduate-entry BDS students who got into the 2022 and 2021 BDS cohorts, and if there is a specific amount of spots reserved for graduate-entry students into BDS.

Yours sincerely,

E

I refer to your Official Information Act request dated 15 May 2022. You
have requested grade breakdowns for the 2021 Bachelor of Oral Health (BOH)
papers (including compulsory papers), as well as information regarding
entry to the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) programme via the Graduate
category.

Please see our responses to each of your questions below.

Grade distribution of all 100, 200 and 300-level BOH papers (including
compulsory papers) for 2021, and the specific grade percentage of the
highest mark for each paper

Subject to the below comments, please find attached the information you
have requested. Please note that there are four sheets in the attached
document (one for each year level of the BOH, and one for the compulsory
papers).

o It is the University’s standard practice to not report on marks which
relate to low numbers of students where we consider that such
disclosure could affect an individual’s privacy and wellbeing. Where
the numbers are very low, there is a risk that the identity of these
students could be determined/inferred, and that their personal
information (i.e. their grades) could be revealed. Accordingly, where
there was only 1 student who achieved the top grade in a particular
paper, we have withheld (“W/H”) the highest percentage score of that
paper – pursuant to section 9(2)(a) of the Official Information Act
(Act). We also note that where the grade is Fail D, where there are
less than 5 students we have indicated this using “<5” (less than 5) –
again to protect the privacy and wellbeing of these students pursuant
to section 9(2)(a) of the Act. We do not consider that the reasons for
withholding this information are outweighed by other considerations
which would make it desirable in the public interest to make the
information available.

o The grade distributions for the BOH compulsory papers are limited to
students enrolled in the BOH programme only.

o Students who withdrew from any of the papers are excluded from the
data.

Number of Graduate-entry BDS students who got into the 2021 and 2022 BDS
cohorts

Please see the below table which shows the number of applications, number
of offers made and number of offers accepted for Graduate category
applicants to the BDS programme in 2020 and 2021.

+------------------------------------------------------------------------+
|  | Entry to the BDS programme via the Graduate category |
|----+-------------------------------------------------------------------|
|Year|Number of Applications|Number of Offers Made| Number of Offers |
| | | | Accepted |
|----+----------------------+---------------------+----------------------|
|2021| 205 | 59 | 13 |
|----+----------------------+---------------------+----------------------|
|2022| 158 | 34 | 12 |
+------------------------------------------------------------------------+

Is there a specific amount of spots reserved for Graduate-entry students
into BDS?

Approximately 30% of domestic places for the BDS programme are allocated
to the Graduate and Alternative categories. The actual number of places
offered to Graduate category applicants is cohort dependent and will
differ each year depending on the number of applicants.

I trust you will find this information helpful.

I note your right to seek a review of these decisions via a complaint to
an Ombudsman. However, we would welcome the opportunity to discuss any
concerns with you first.

Ngâ mihi

Kelsey
