Entrance Scores to Health Professional Programmes

Josiah made this Official Information request to University of Otago

The request was successful.

From: Josiah

Kia ora,

I am writing to make a formal request under the New Zealand Official Information Act 1982. I would like to obtain information regarding the minimum and mean GPA/Score of successful applicants to certain academic courses, within certain categories and subcategories, for the most recent academic year for which data is available. Please provide weighted GPA or score where applicable to the entrance category (e.g. Postgraduate Medicine weighted GPA, or HSFY Medicine score).
Specifically, I am requesting the minimum and mean GPA/Score for each of the following courses:
1. Medicine
2. Dentistry
3. Physiotherapy
4. Dental Technology
5. Medical Laboratory Science
6. Oral Health
7. Pharmacy
8. Radiation Therapy

For each course listed, I would like the data to be further categorised into the following groups:
1. Postgraduate
2. HSFY (Health Sciences First Year)
And within each category, the following subcategories:
1. Māori
2. NZRIPO (New Zealand Residents of Indigenous Pacific Origins)
3. Socioeconomic Equity
4. Refugee Background
5. New Zealand Rural Origins
Where applicable, I would also appreciate data reflecting Single Programme Preference applications.

I appreciate that this request is not simple, and have provided an example as follows to clarify my request. Please note that this is only to demonstrate the intent of my request and I do not mind how the data is provided.
--------------------------
The information could be provided in a table with Course & Category down the y-axis header column (e.g. Medicine Postgraduate, Medicine HSFY, Physiotherapy HSFY Single Programme Preference, Physiotherapy HSFY Non-Single Program Preference, …) and subcategories listed across the x-axis header row (e.g. General, Māori, NZRIPO, …). The minimum and mean score/GPA for each category could then be listed separated by a comma (e.g. 7.45, 8.23).
--------------------------
Please let me know if you have any questions, or require further clarification of the request or its scope. Thank you for your attention to this matter, it is appreciated.

Many thanks,
Josiah B.

Kia ora Josiah

We refer to your information request dated 7 July 2023 made under the Official Information Act 1982 (Act). You have requested information about Health Professional Programme entrance scores related to the eight programmes, broken down into entry categories.

The Act requires that we advise you of our decision on your request no later than 20 working days after the date your request was received. Therefore, we have decided that we are able to provide the information requested. We do, however, require some additional time to collate this information and will provide it to you no later than Monday, 21 August 2023.

Please note that it may be necessary for information to be withheld pursuant to section 9(2)(a) of the Act - on occasions where fewer than five students were admitted under a category and/or sub-category, we will determine that it is necessary to withhold the Grade Point Average (GPA) information for these students to protect their privacy and wellbeing. We consider that withholding this information is necessary to protect against the identity of these students being determined or inferred, and their personal information (i.e. their GPA) could be disclosed.

We thank you for your patience and will endeavour to provide you with the information sooner, if possible.

If you are not satisfied with our response, you have the right to make a complaint to the Ombudsman under section 28(3) of the Act. However, we would welcome the opportunity to discuss any concerns with you first.

Ngā mihi
Jenny
