MEDSCi 205 Marking Guidance in Previous Years
Mr Davies made this Official Information request to University of Auckland
This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for Mr Davies to read a recent response and update the status.
From: Mr Davies
Dear University of Auckland,
Request 1: I am writing to request all documents (emails, pdfs, worked example answers to questions) that provided grading guidance to individuals responsible for grading the following MEDSCI 205 assessments:
MEDSCI 205 Module A Test (2022)
MEDSCI 205 Module B Test (2021)
MEDSCI 205 Exam (2021)
MEDSCI 205 Exam (2020)
Request 2: To save time and resources, if a document containing "holistic marking guidance" exists, it will be sufficient merely to attach that guidance for each assessment named above.
By "holistic marking guidance" I mean a document that either:
a) contains model answers to questions posed in the above assessments that would be awarded full marks; or
b) in the case of rubric-based guidance, contains a mark-by-mark breakdown explaining how graders were directed to grade particular questions.
If "holistic marking guidance" does not exist for any of the above assessments, please respond to request 1.
Yours faithfully,
Mr Davies

Dear Mr Davies,
I refer to your request of 22 April 2022. The University’s response
follows:
“Request 1: I am writing to request all documents (emails, pdfs, worked
example answers to questions) that provided grading guidance to
individuals responsible for grading the following MEDSCI 205 assessments:
MEDSCI 205 Module A Test (2022)
MEDSCI 205 Module B Test (2021)
MEDSCI 205 Exam (2021)
MEDSCI 205 Exam (2020)”
Request 2: To save time and resources, if a document containing "holistic
marking guidance" exists, it will be sufficient merely to attach that
guidance for each assessment named above.
By "holistic marking guidance" I mean a document that either:
a) contains model answers to questions posed in the above assessments that
would be awarded full marks; or
b) in the case of rubric-based guidance, contains a mark-by-mark breakdown
explaining how graders were directed to grade particular questions.
If "holistic marking guidance" does not exist for any of the above
assessments, please respond to request 1.”
The policy and procedure documents for test and exam marking at the
University of Auckland are publicly available here:
o [1]https://www.auckland.ac.nz/en/about-us/a...
o [2]https://cdn.auckland.ac.nz/assets/auckla...
Further, all staff marking for MEDSCI 205 mark relative to the UoA grade
descriptor, which is publicly available here:
o [3]https://cdn.auckland.ac.nz/assets/auckla...
This constitutes a partial refusal of your request under section 18(d) of
the Official Information Act, on the ground that the information requested
is publicly available.
The marking guidance provided for MEDSCI 205 is as follows:
o Summary synthesis information provided to Teaching Assistants (TAs)
for specific questions, to allow TAs to manage bulk marking of short
answer questions.
This information is withheld under section 9(2)(k) of the Official
Information Act, to prevent the disclosure or use of official information
for improper gain or improper advantage. The short answer questions to
which the withheld information relates test factual knowledge and
synthesis of combined factual knowledge. The factual knowledge required to
answer these questions are contained on the lecture slides provided to
students, and which students had access to as they sat their tests and
exams online for the 2020-2022 exam period in question. Making the
requested documents publicly available in response to your request is
likely to harm student learning as it is expected students with access to
this information would rely on using this general summary rather than
learning the specific material and how to synthesise knowledge to create
the correct answers.
You have the right to make a complaint to an Ombudsman if you are
dissatisfied with this response.
Yours sincerely,
Rebecca Ewert
