Faculty of Law Assessment Grading
Greg D made this Official Information request to University of Auckland
This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for Greg D to read recent responses and update the status.
From: Greg D
Dear University of Auckland,
The Assessment (Coursework, Tests and Examinations) Policy provides that: 'Feedback must be provided in a timely manner and no later than three weeks after the day the assessment was submitted, or sooner when the feedback is required to prepare for subsequent assessments.'
Despite this, there have been Faculty of Law assessments that have not been returned in the three-week turnaround period this year.
Could you please provide as follows:
. any other policy around coursework marking timeframes either generally in the university or specific to the law faculty
. the total number of Faculty of Law assessments conducted at the time of your reply this year in semesters one and two
. the total number of Faculty of Law assessments where marks and feedback have been provided after three weeks of submission at the time of your reply this year in semesters one and two
. the mean turnaround time for Faculty of Law assessments this year in semesters one and two
. written correspondence related to the LAW 231 essay this semester and the delay in the release of results to students
Yours faithfully,
Greg D
From: Greg D
Dear University of Auckland,
To clarify the meaning of my third request: please provide the number of Faculty of Law assessments that have only had marks/feedback returned AFTER the three week turnaround period.
Yours faithfully,
Greg D
From: Rebecca Ewert
University of Auckland
Dear Greg,
I refer to your request of 12 August 2021. The University’s response
follows.
“Could you please provide as follows:
. any other policy around coursework marking timeframes either generally
in the university or specific to the law faculty”
The Law School aims to return marks and feedback within 3 weeks for each
piece of assessment. On the day of assignment submission, markers are
emailed the marking timeframe which is around 2.5 weeks from submission
(depending on how the working days fall within that timeframe). This
allows for 2-3 days for processing and any additional moderation. We set
a 'due back to students' date which is 3 weeks from the date of
submission. Note this excludes exams (and for courses which do not have a
final exam, the final piece of coursework) which do not fall under the 3
week Law School guidelines; the University sets the due date for exams and
final results submission.
“. the total number of Faculty of Law assessments conducted at the time of
your reply this year in semesters one and two”
As of 17 August 2021, 66 assessment tasks (excluding exams) have been
submitted in Semester One 2021 and 15 in Semester Two 2021. In Semester
One 2021, there were also 13 exams, and 11 courses without a final exam.
“. the total number of Faculty of Law assessments where marks and feedback
have been provided after three weeks of submission at the time of your
reply this year in semesters one and two”
Of the assessment tasks submitted in Semester One 2021, 41 of the 66
assessment tasks (excluding exams and final coursework) were returned to
students within the 3 week timeframe. As of 17 August 2021, 3 assessment
tasks submitted in Semester Two 2021 are due to be returned to students; 1
has met the 3 week timeframe. Two additional assessment tasks which are
not yet due to be returned to students have already been returned.
“. the mean turnaround time for Faculty of Law assessments this year in
semesters one and two”
As mean turnaround time is not a current metric in Law School reporting,
the information requested is not held by the University. The Law School
tracks each piece of assessment in every course individually to calculate
return dates and plan and allocate workload. This constitutes a refusal of
your request under section 18(g) of the Official Information Act.
“. written correspondence related to the LAW 231 essay this semester and
the delay in the release of results to students”
The requested correspondence related to routine assessment matters, such
as allocation of essays to marking groups and markers, co-ordination of
marking, marker enquiries about marking (i.e. questions about how to mark
particular answer content), moderation, consultation on essay feedback,
and individual student enquiries about marking of their assignments, have
been withheld as trivial under section 18(h) of the Official Information
Act. Many of these documents also contain personal information about
students, and that information would have been withheld to protect their
privacy. The requested correspondence related to academic misconduct
matters is withheld under section 9(2)(a) of the Official Information Act,
to protect the privacy of the persons to whom it relates, and section
9(2)(g)(i) of the Official Information Act.
The other correspondence requested is attached.
You have the right to make a complaint to an Ombudsman about this response
if you wish.
Yours sincerely,
Rebecca Ewert
