From: Rebecca Rush
Department of Conservation

Dear T Austen

Thank you for getting in touch with the Department of Conservation regarding when Goldie Bush Walkway will be reopened.

Goldie Bush Scenic Reserve and Motutara Settlement Scenic Reserve have been closed since 4 December 2020 under the Reserves Act 1977 as a precautionary measure to protect kauri from the spread of kauri dieback. There is currently no proven cure or treatment and nearly all infected kauri die. The disease is easily spread through soil movements – including through the movement of footwear. We can save our kauri forests by containing the disease and stopping it spreading to other areas.

Unfortunately we do not have a timeframe for opening Goldie Bush Walkway. The work needed on the walkway to safeguard kauri will require significant resourcing and will take some time to complete.

I appreciate how disappointing it is that the walkway remains closed at this time. While the walkway is closed we would encourage you to use other tracks in the region. The popular DOC walkway, the Te Henga Walkway, is located nearby.

Can you please advise if the information I have provided satisfies your information request? On confirmation that you are satisfied with the information provided, your Official Information Act request will be closed off as complete.

Kind regards
Rebecca
