A made this Official Information request to University of Otago

The request was successful.

From: A

Dear University of Otago,

I am making an OIA request for the grade distribution of 200, 300, 400 and 500 level dentistry papers for 2021.

This should specify how many students received each grade (A+, A, A-, etc) for each paper across 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th year, as well as the specific grade percentage of the highest mark for each paper.

Yours faithfully,

A

I refer to your information request dated 6 February 2022 made under the
Official Information Act 1982 (Act). You have requested grade breakdowns
of each Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) paper in 2021.

Subject to the comments below, please find attached the information you
have requested.

o It is the University’s standard practice to not report on marks which
relate to low numbers of students where we consider that such
disclosure could affect an individual’s privacy and wellbeing. Where
the numbers are very low, there is a risk that the identity of these
students could be determined/inferred, and that their personal
information (i.e. their grades) could be revealed. Accordingly, where
there was only 1 student who achieved the top grade in a particular
paper, we have withheld (“WH”) the highest percentage score of that
paper – pursuant to section 9(2)(a) of the Act.

o Students who withdrew from the BDS programme are excluded from the
data.

o The grade value AE is equivalent to an A+ Distinction.

o The attached information includes a paper (DENT553) that is awarded
either a pass or fail result (not a grade). Therefore there is no
highest percentage score for this paper, and is indicated as not
applicable (“NA”) in the attached information.

We note your right to seek a review of these decisions via a complaint to
an Ombudsman. However, we would welcome the opportunity to discuss any
concerns with you first.

Ngā mihi

Kelsey
