I refer to your request of 10 May 2022. The University’s response follows.

 

“I am requesting an estimate on the costs all added up of designing,
constructing and such or something similar within reason for the new
recreation and wellness centre being built between kate edgar and the
science building. A document totalling all estimated costs would be
appreciated”

 

The requested document is attached. Detailed cost breakdown information
has been redacted from the document under section 9(2)(j) of the OIA, as
the University Recreation and Wellness Centre is a current project and it
is necessary to withhold costing information to avoid prejudice to any
negotiations with contractors in relation to supply chain issues due to
Covid. Further, if this part of your request had not been refused under
section 9(2)(j), then the University would have considered the need to
withhold that information to avoid prejudicing the commercial positions of
our contractors (by revealing to their competitors and potential future
clients how much they charged the University for particular work) and the
need to protect information subject to an obligation of confidence.

 

The University looks forward to realising the many benefits that this new
facility will enable, including an improved student experience, greater
social connection, and a vibrant central city campus, where the
University’s commitment to our students wellbeing is clearly evident. The
benefits of sport and exercise on physical and mental health and cognitive
ability are well documented and widely understood.  The availability of a
convenient on-campus facility, of appropriate scale and appeal, will make
exercise more convenient, cost effective, and therefore more likely.  The
current global pandemic and the ongoing recovery from its impacts
highlight the need for prioritising investment for services and facilities
that support an active and healthy lifestyle.  The scale of Sport and
Recreation activity at the University of Auckland, whether directly
provided or indirectly supported by the former Recreation Centre is
significant:

o 6,400 student Recreation Centre members, and 400 staff Recreation
Centre members
o 2,600 group fitness and dance classes held during the year –
approximately 59,000 class attendances per annum
o a total of 343,000 visits to the Recreation Centre per annum, making
it one of the busiest of any in the country (whether private, council
or university operated)
o 2,600 participants in sports leagues, inter-faculty and inter-tertiary
tournaments
o support for 28 sport clubs with a combined membership of 3,400
students, 1,690 of them using the sports hall and studios
o an estimated 41,000 casual uses of free facilities such as table
tennis and basketball hoops

Approximately 10,500 individual students used the previous Sport
and Recreation facilities in a typical year; the new Recreation and
Wellness Centre will extend these benefits to a further 10,000 students.
