Good afternoon Carl

Please find an update on the progress of the EF class as per below.

As at the last update provided to our stakeholders, good progress is being made and Technicians are advancing the refresh of eth first locomotive.
Refurbishment work has now advanced to planning on locomotives 30163 and 30226. The updated cab layout is still under fabrication but has begun to be installed and preparations for the fire protection have started.
The Traction Control System electronic component works are now undergoing beta testing and the first control replacement systems are also undergoing testing. Prioritisation of some of the refurbished components are now starting to be used in the operational fleet to improve performance.

Recently completed works include:
. Two converter pumps mounted, 30163 transformer pipes completed including jigs, first converter delivery pipe trial fitted, tacked up ready for welding. Four converters flushed and testing completed on two.
. Delivery taken of transformer oil preheater, trial install and refinements completed.
. Headlight boxes installed and welded.
. Top lift uncoupler trial fit underway.
. Loco livery agreed and booked in for paint.

Upcoming works include:
. Ester oil change out to transformer and converters to take place.
. First brake units to be installed.
. Fabricated cab assemblies to be delivered and commence fitting to 30163 and 30226.
. Project Build Plan to be completed for 30226.

The first locomotive is planned to be completed and out of the mechanical workshop in early 2022. This is still subject to the remaining key components arriving which have been delayed due to Covid-19. The loco will then go through a static commissioning process and system tests in the Hutt workshops. Following a successful test, the loco will be towed to the Palmerston North EF depot, so that it can be tested under the 25kV overhead wire for test runs, brake tests, locomotive engineer training etc.

The target date for commissioning and return to service is late March 2022, however this may change depending on the arrival of key components.

Please get in touch with any further queries.

Kind regards

Dave
