MBChB Admissions Information

Ms Muir made this Official Information request to University of Auckland

This request has been withdrawn by the person who made it. There may be an explanation in the correspondence below.

From: Ms Muir

Dear University of Auckland,

Please provide the following information in regards to MBChB admissions.

In a previous request, you stated that:

“Mean and standard deviation are calculated from the scores for each category. In the General admissions category, FY mean and standard deviation are calculated independently of Grad mean and standard deviation. This ensures that both FY and Grad applicants are evaluated fairly.”

For how many years has it been the case that the mean and standard deviation for graduate and first-year applicants have been calculated independently?

Last year, there was a noticeable change in the makeup of the general admissions offers for the MBChB programme. Previous requests have revealed that, in the general category, the makeup of the cohorts consisted of:

2016: FY= 120 Grad= 34 Total = 154
2017: FY= 121 Grad= 40 Total = 161
2018: FY= 97 Grad= 44 Total = 141
2019: FY= 113 Grad= 36 Total = 149
2020: FY= 101 Grad= 29 Total = 130

This averages to 147 admissions in the general category between 2016-2020, with roughly 110 FYs and 37 Grads, a ratio of approximately 11:4.

2021: FY= 54 Grad= 68 Total = 122

This 2021 ratio is closer to 1:1, contrasting the makeup of the general cohort in prior years.

Do the 2021 admission numbers reflect a change in the way general admission rankings are determined?

Was 2021 the first year that the mean and standard deviation for graduate and first-year applicants were calculated independently?

If not, could you please advise reasonings for the reduction in the number of FY general admissions and increase in graduate admissions?

Is the University of Auckland moving towards favouring graduate admissions for MBChB entry, or to making the cohort equally made up of graduate and FY applicants?

Also, please provide information on the number of students in the general category waitlisted between 2016-2021, and the number of waitlisted students in the general category who subsequently received an offer of place in the MBChB programme.

Looking forward to your response.

Yours Faithfully,

Ms Muir
