    Dear Mr Coley

I refer to your Official Information Act request of 13 June 2014 which was
transferred to New Zealand Police for reply.  You asked for the following
 information:

·         Since Department of Conservation began keeping records, how many
incidents of death have occurred in Fiordland National Parks? Broken down
 yearly.
·         How many of these deaths are attributed to tramping related
 accidents? Broken down yearly.
·         How many of these deaths are attributed to natural causes?
 Broken down yearly.
·         How many of these deaths are attributed to firearms? Broken down
 yearly.

Police does not hold this information but understands the information is
held by the Ministry of Justice. I have therefore transferred this part of
your request to the Ministry of Justice pursuant to section 14 of the
 Official Information Act 1982.

Your request for the number of records of search and rescue that exist,
broken down yearly will be replied to by Police.

Pursuant to section 15A of the Official Information Act 1982, I advise you
of the requirement to extend the time limit to respond to your requests.
The period of the extension is until 15 August 2014.

The reason for the extension is that the time required to research and
collate the requested information and for the consultations necessary to
make a decision on the request are such that a proper response cannot
reasonably be made within the original time limit.

You have the right, under section 28(3) of the Official Information Act
1982, to ask the Ombudsman to investigate and review my decision to extend
the time limit for deciding upon your request.

Yours sincerely

Hi Matthew. If DoC doesn't transfer this themselves, you should consider redirecting the request to both Police and to Maritime NZ. The RCCNZ inside MNZ is responsible for responding to all PLB activations (even on land) whereas Police are the official response agency in other emergency callouts. I suspect there's a reasonable chance that DoC wouldn't directly keep it's own records except for when it's asked to be involved our otherwise obtained them from these agencies. I may be wrong, though.
