Thank you for your email of 7 October 2021 to the Ministry of Business,
Innovation and Employment (MBIE) requesting, under the Official
Information Act 1982 (the Act), the following information:
“… all communications since the 2017 general election with DLA Piper.”
On 18 October 2021, we sought clarification from you on whether you were
only interested in communications with DLA Piper that were related to
services MBIE paid for, and whether there was any particular subject
matter or area of interest that you had in mind for the communications?
(E.g. immigration; employment relations; building and tenancy.) We asked
that you get back to us by 21 October 2021.
On 22 October 2021, we re-sent the same clarification to you emphasising
that (given MBIE’s size and breadth) your information request could
feasibly encompass a high volume of emails for research and collation.
We have identified 16,000 emails with DLA Piper, from over 200 MBIE email
addresses. The emails range from multiple areas of the business (Managed
Isolation and Quarantine; Legal, Ethics and Privacy; Finance and
Performance’s Procurement team; employment resolution services;
Immigration New Zealand).
In line with our correspondence with you thus far, due to MBIE’s size and
breadth, we believe your information request lacks due particularity
and/or would result in substantial collation.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman.
Information about how to make a complaint is available at
[1]www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or free 0800 802 602.
