Thank you for your email of 1 October 2021 to the Ministry of Business,
Innovation & Employment (MBIE) requesting the following information:
I am writing in regards to know the total number of work visa holders
currently in New Zealand. Please provide the number of each category
below:
1. Essential Skills
2. Work to Residence
3. Post Study Work Visa
4. Migrant Exploitation Work Visa
5. SMC Job Search Visa
6. Religious Worker Visa
7. Special Work Visa for victims of people trafficking 8. Special Work
Visa for victims of family violence's 9. Silver Fern Practical Experience
The information requested is publically available in the Migration Data
Explorer published by MBIE through their website ([1]Migration Data
Explorer (shinyapps.io)). Information in the Migration Data Explorer is
updated monthly and so the most recent data available currently is to the
end of September 2021.
For those unfamiliar with the Migration Data Explorer, the requested
information can be found using the following method:
To obtain the figures for Essential Skills, Work to Residence, and Post
Study Work
1. In the sidebar, under Dataset, select Population.
2. Under Variables, select Application_Substream.
3. Under Filters, click Add a new filter.
a. Under Variable to Filter, click Date.
b. Under Filter Criteria, select the most recent month (currently
2021-09-30).
c. Click OK.
d. Under Variable to Filter, click Visa_Type.
e. Under Filter Criteria, select Work.
f. Click OK.
g. Under Variable to Filter, click Application_Substream.
h. Under Filter Criteria, select Essential Skills, Work to
residence, and Post Study Work.
i. Click OK.
To obtain the other figures requested, follow the same method as above
except unclick Application_Substream under Variable to Filter then click
Application_criteria instead and select Migrant exploitation protection,
Job Search, Religious Worker, Victims of People Trafficking, Victims of
Domestic Violence, and Silver Fern Practical Experience before clicking
OK.
You can download this data by clicking Download Data as CSV in the
top-right of the Explorer after you have set up each of the two types of
filters outlined above.
Please note that all figures are randomly rounded to base three, as per
Stats NZ best practice. If figures are summed manually, in Excel for
example, this rounding will be applied to each individual total and
therefore be included multiple times in any overall total. If the
combining of individual totals is carried out within the Explorer by
unclicking any variables in the Variable panel (all filtering will still
apply), the rounding will only be applied once to the overall total.
If the information provided is not sufficient, or if you have any further
questions, feel free to submit a new request via [2][email address]
