Council facilities energy sources

Finn Jackson made this Official Information request to Christchurch City Council

The request was successful.

From: Finn Jackson

Tēnā koe Christchurch City Council,

Can you please tell me how Pioneer Recreation and Sport Centre, the Beckenham Service Centre, and South Library source their energy? Eg is it consumed directly from the electric grid, or are they powered by coal-fired or biomass boilers, or another source?

Additionally, if they are powered by non-renewable sources, has there been any consideration of switching to renewable sources?

Thanks very much!

Finn Jackson

Dear Finn,

Thank you for your email, received on 8 September. You requested the
following information, under the Local Government Official Information and
Meetings Act 1987 (LGOIMA):

“Can you please tell me how Pioneer Recreation and Sport Centre, the
Beckenham Service Centre, and South Library source their energy? Eg is it
consumed directly from the electric grid, or are they powered by
coal-fired or biomass boilers, or another source? Additionally, if they
are powered by non-renewable sources, has there been any consideration of
switching to renewable sources?”.

Both Pioneer Recreation and Sport Centre and Beckenham Service
Centre/South Library buildings source all of their energy from electricity
from the grid. Pioneer Recreation Centre is heated using aquifer source
heat pumps and Beckenham Service Centre/South Library uses water source
heat pumps which use the potable mains water supply as a heat source.

In both facilities, heat pumps use electricity to extract heat from water
to be used in the buildings. The remaining energy needs (lights, security,
small power) are provided by electricity.

I hope this information assists, however please let me know if you have
further questions.

You have the right to ask the Ombudsman to investigate and review our
decision. Complaints can be sent by email to
[2][email address].

Publication of responses to LGOIMA requests

Please note: our LGOIMA responses may be published on the Christchurch
City Council website a month after they have been responded to, with
requesters’ personal details withheld. If you have any concerns about this
please contact the Official Information team on
[3][Christchurch City Council request email].
