I was wondering if you can give me any statistics on how many hoarding
cases the council has responded to or has been notified of in the last few

and in private houses that will be great.

support people with hoarding". 

 

Please find below a response to your LGOIMA request.

 

1.       Total number of hoarding cases identified in the last few years?
How many cases were in rental properties and in private houses?

 

Since January 2017, there has been a total of 58 cases identified. See
below a breakdown of these figures by year. Council records do not
classify these between private or rental accommodation.

2.  What actions the Council may take in these circumstances?

 

Depending on the situation, the Environmental Health team could issue a
cleansing order to have the property cleaned or in a severe case, the
Environmental Health team could contract a cleaning company to do the work
with a charge placed on the land.

In most hoarding cases, a multi-agency approach is used for a satisfactory
resolution. As hoarding complaints often reflect social issues, when
dealing with such complaints, staff work with the hoarder to seek the help
and support they require (this help could be from other agencies or
friends and family of the hoarder) to reduce their hoardings to a degree
that does not have an adverse effect on the environment or their
neighbours.

 

3. What other agencies would the council involve to support people with
hoarding?

 

Council staff in the past have worked collaboratively with staff from
other Government, non-profit organisations, and associates (friends,
family etc.) of the hoarders in order to provide them support. Some of the
agencies that we have worked with are Tenancy services from MBIE, Fire and
Emergency New Zealand, Oranga Tamariki, CDHB, Salvation Army, Kainga Ora
Homes Ltd and elderly services.
