Advice on West Coast basin area of block offer

Dear Minister of Energy and Resources,

Last week the government announced that it was opening eight new areas for oil and gas exploration ("Govt opens eight areas for oil and gas exploration", NZ Herald, 2 April 2014). It has since been revealed that one of the areas opened up was Victoria Forest Park on the West Coast, and that the Minister was unaware of this fact ("Minister didn't know park was in drilling plan", 3 News, 8 April 2008).

I would like to request the following information under the OIA:

* all advice on the West Coast Basin release area of the 2014 block offer. I am particularly interested in advice (if any) on the conservation values of the land being opened up for exploration.

I would prefer to receive an electronic response. Queries about this request will be automatically forwarded to me by the fyi.org.nz website.

With regards to s12 of the OIA, I am an NZ citizen and in NZ.

I refer to your request for information received in this office on 9 April
2014.

 

Under section 15A(1) of the Act the decision has been made to extend the
time limit for responding to your request by 5 working days to 19 May
2014, as the request is for a large quantity of official information and
consultations necessary to make a decision on the request are such that a
proper response cannot reasonably be made within the original time limit.

 

While the extension is for 5 working days, efforts will be made to respond
to your request before this time.

 

You have the right, under section 28(3) of the Act, to make a complaint to
an Ombudsman about the extension.
