What work is involved in the continuing rail maintenance
L Connolly made this Official Information request to Auckland Transport
The request was successful.
From: L Connolly
Dear Auckland Transport,
Over the 2020 - 2021 period there has been a large amount of urgent track maintenance on all train lines, with long shutdown periods and more work to come. What work is actually required? Full replacement of the sleepers? Steel of the tracks warping requiring new steel? Have the causes of these issues been identified? I know some of it has been preparing for the rail loop and I'm not interested in the detail around that as that's very transparent. We're all very curious about what the issue is and how long this could potentially take.
Thanks,
Yours faithfully,
L Connolly

Thank you for getting in touch regarding Kiwirail Track maintenance work.
Following an inspection regime Kiwirail have identified Rail Contact
Fatigue on the train lines which results in cracking of the tracks. The
cause of this issue has been identified as wear over time. Please see
attached information leaflet from Kiwirail.
The rail requires replacing which is due to be completed by March 2020
across the entire network with the exception of the Papakura to Pukekohe
line which will be completed by mid-April 2021.
