Covid-19 cases in Taranaki by SA2
G S made this Official Information request to Taranaki District Health Board
The request was refused by Taranaki District Health Board.
From: G S
Dear Taranaki District Health Board,
I request, under the Official Information Act 1982, a table showing the number of Covid-19 cases in Taranaki by Statistical Area Unit 2 (as defined by Statistics NZ) of the usually residential address of the infection person. Using SA2 level data limits any privacy implications so this information can be released whilst maintaining privacy.
Given the current pandemic status, I request that this be treated as an urgent request.
Yours faithfully,
G S

Good Afternoon - Have you checked the Ministry of Health and NZ Stats web site? They both have the latest available Covid -19 statistics, which may or may not be in the format you have requested.
I will await your response before your request is considered further.
As a matter of record please provide your name rather than simply initials.
Regards

Dear Jenny McLennan [TDHB],
Thank you for your response. As far as I can find, the Ministry of Health website does not include SA2 level data on cases, simply by DHB. So it is not already publicly available.
Yours sincerely,
Graham Stodard

Good Morning - Please note that Taranaki DHB declines your OIA request due to the following:
1. Taranaki DHB does not readily hold the information you have requested in Statistical Area 2s (SA2s). The presentation of Covid-19 data in SA2s could lead to the easy identification due to the small population numbers involved. Taranaki DHB is not willing to provide Taranaki Covid-19 cases as defined by SA2s as in terms of Section 9 (2) (a) in order to protect the privacy of natural persons.
Census Definition -
Statistical Area 2 - is a geographical unit which aims to reflect communities that interact together socially and economically. In major urban areas, an SA2 often approximates a single suburb, generally with a population of 2,000 - 4,000 residents. SA2s in district council areas generally have a population of 1,000 - 3,000. In rural areas, SA2 may have fewer than 1,000 residents if they cover large areas that have sparse population.
The health sector is working hard to ensure that the public is informed about COVID-19 and the work to respond to it with information updated daily on the Ministry of Health website.
