Carbon offsets for NZSO activities
Michael Brown made this Official Information request to New Zealand Symphony Orchestra
The request was successful.
From: Michael Brown
Dear New Zealand Symphony Orchestra,
I am interested in how different cultural organisations in New Zealand are responding to the threat of climate change, in particular how they are mitigating the environmental impact of their own activities.
A large music ensemble which tours frequently, such as the NZSO, probably generates substantial carbon emissions.
Does the NZSO currently measure and offset its emissions? Or does it have any plans to offset these in future; or any other plans, policies or strategies around reducing its environmental footprint?
If you could please supply any reports or similar documents which help answer these questions, that would be appreciated.
Yours faithfully,
Michael Brown

Dear New Zealand Symphony Orchestra,
The OIA request I made on 28 September is now overdue. Under the legislation, you should normally have responded by 25 October. Please attend to the query or, if you require more time, advise of the need for an extension and the reason for this.
Thank you,
Michael Brown

After contacting the NZSO directly in early 2020, they emailed the following response:
Hi Michael,
I refer to your OIA request covering the following questions.
Question: Does the NZSO currently measure and offset its emissions?
Response: The NZSO does not currently measure and offset its emissions.
Question: Or does it have any plans to offset these in future; or any other plans, policies or strategies around reducing its environmental footprint?
Response: The NZSO is in the early stages of reviewing its plans for measuring and reducing its emissions. This year the NZSO will develop a new Sustainability Policy including the need to address climate change and its environmental footprint in its planning and delivery processes in the future.
Regards,
Richard
