Measles vaccine cost.
Andrew Crow made this Official Information request to Ministry of Health
The request was successful.
From: Andrew Crow
Dear Ministry of Health,
I ask that this request be actioned promptly due to the current events and interest and the mixed advice I have been given.
I have been told by a nurse that the MMR vaccine must be free to members of the public who require it, it was stated that it is against the guidance of MoH to charge any fee for MMR vaccine.
I have also become aware of a doctor who is charging a $15 fee as a “needle fee”.
Under OIA I ask for the direction given to doctors around the cost of MMR to the public. Can a doctor charge a fee or should the vaccine be totally free?
Yours faithfully,
Andrew Crow

Kia ora Mr Crow
Thank you for your query of 9 September 2019 regarding the MMR vaccine.
The Ministry of Health does not direct general practices on what they can,
and cannot charge as additional fees (i.e. the vaccine itself may be free
but there may be additional costs when it is administered, which a
practice is entitled to charge.)
Generally, the MMR vaccine is free for anyone born after 1969 (as stated
in the Pharmaceutical Schedule), and GP visits are free for individuals
aged 14 and under; however, it is important to note that subsidies are
only paid for 'eligible' groups.
For your reference, the eligbility criteria is publicly available on the
Ministry website:
