Information about actions taken since climate emergency declared

Hugh Davenport made this Official Information request to Christchurch City Council

The request was successful.

From: Hugh Davenport

Dear Christchurch City Council,

Since you declared a climate emergency last month, I would like to know what tangible steps you have taken to improve the climate change problem. I would also like to know what steps you have planned for the immediate future, with timelines and action points required.

For all of these actions made or planned, I would like to see data showing how it improved (or will improve).

If no actions have been made or planned to date, I would like to request the reason why the council declared an emergency then did nothing to follow through with that declaration.

Yours faithfully,

Hugh Davenport

Dear Mr Davenport,

I refer to your official information request we received on August 20 2019
requesting the following:

Since you declared a climate emergency last month, I would like to know
what tangible steps you have taken to improve the climate change problem.
I would also like to know what steps you have planned for the immediate
future, with timelines and action points required.

For all of these actions made or planned, I would like to see data showing
how it improved (or will improve).

If no actions have been made or planned to date, I would like to request
the reason why the council declared an emergency then did nothing to
follow through with that declaration.

Response:

The Christchurch City Council has a history of taking action on climate
change. As an organisation, the Council has committed to be carbon neutral
by 2030, and joined the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy.
This work is ongoing and part of a broad climate change work programme,
which includes development of a new climate change strategy and action
plans. The first stage of this work is to set new targets for greenhouse
gas emissions in the Christchurch district. Public consultation on setting
a city wide target was undertaken 17 July – 14 August and a decision will
be made by the Council on setting a target in September.

The Council resolved to undertake a number of actions including raising
public awareness about climate change and we have undertaken a survey of
residents asking them about their views on climate change. We are also
working with other Councils to understand their approach to responding to
climate change and have made a submission on the Climate change response
(Zero Carbon) amendment bill.  The full list of resolutions outlining the
actions are available at this link [1]here and further information and
updates on initiatives are available on our website [2]here

Please let us know if you require any further information.

You have the right to ask the Ombudsman to investigate and review our
decision. Complaints can be sent by email to
[3][email address], by fax to (04) 471 2254, or by post to
The Ombudsman, PO Box 10152, Wellington 6143.

Kind regards,
