Front Number Plate Fixture Requirements

Mr Muller made this Official Information request to New Zealand Transport Agency

The request was successful.

From: Mr Muller

Dear New Zealand Transport

I would like to request information regarding the display of a number plate at the front of a private motor vehicle.

According to the NZTA website, it states, "All plates must be fixed securely to the vehicle in an upright position. They must be displayed so that all the characters (numbers and letters) are clearly visible at all times."

Since the NZTA website states, "The Transport Agency is no longer actively pursuing an adhesive plate product. We were unable to find a suitable product that the manufacturer would guarantee and that could be provided at a reasonable price."

If a private vehicle owner, is able to obtain, on their own, an adhesive number plate, which meets the requirements that:

- It is fixed securely to the vehicle in an upright position.
- It is displayed so that all the characters (numbers and letters) are clearly visible at all times.

Please provide all information, which states whether this is legal or illegal in New Zealand.

Yours faithfully,
Mr Muller

From: Mr Muller

Dear Michelle Charlton,

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my original request. I have read your response and would like to make a further inquiry, since it may have been unclear in my original information request.

According to the Land Transport (Motor Vehicle Registration and Licensing) Regulations 2011, in Part 4 (Registration plates), sub section: Issue of plates. Under the sub heading, (33) Form of ordinary plates (page 19), subclause (5) states, "The base material of an ordinary plate must be aluminium or any other material that may be determined by the Registrar."

Superseding this, under the sub heading, (33) Form of ordinary plates (page 19), sub-clause (6) states, "Despite subclause (5), an ordinary plate to be fixed to the front of a motor vehicle may be in the form of an adhesive label."

Following these regulations, and complying with the NZTA stated requirements (Display of number plates: https://www.nzta.govt.nz/vehicles/licens...) , if a private vehicle owner, is able to obtain, on their own, an adhesive number plate, which meets the requirements that:

- It is fixed securely to the vehicle in an upright position.
- It is displayed so that all the characters (numbers and letters) are clearly visible at all times.
- Which meets the necessary reflective and security standards.

Please provide all information, which states whether this is legal or illegal in New Zealand.

Kind Regards,
Mr Muller

Dear Michelle Charlton,

Thanks for taking the time to respond to me. I appreciate your valuable feedback. This is part of an information gathering activity regarding the legislation around the manufacturing and issuing of a number plate in New Zealand. This information gathering is based on the fact that a company not owned by a New Zealand entity is tasked with this activity.

Yours sincerely,

Mr Muller
