Dear Department of Conservation,

Hi Hannah,

Thanks for your OIA request. I’d like to clarify some aspects of our
request to ensure that we are providing responses to the questions that
you really want to have answered.

My understanding of your request is that you are wanting information on:

 1. The amount of money paid by Doc to mining companies 2015 -2019.
 2. Which mining companies paid Doc money in the last three years and what
were the sums?

I can immediately provide an answer to the first part of the question –
the answer is $0.

I’d like to further clarify the aspects of the second part of the
question.

There are a number of reasons that Doc receives money from mining
companies. These can be as processing fees for staff to process the
various applications for Doc approval lodged by mining companies during
the year. There can also be file management fees in relation to ongoing
administration charges. There are also compensation payments which are set
within the Access Arrangements and relate to activities undertaken on
public conservation land in the previous year. I would like to clarify
whether you are wanting to understand all of these charges, or a
particular aspect?

Please also be aware that in order to provide this information, I will
need to obtain the assistance of our finance department to run reports and
collate this information for you. This will take some time and therefore I
will look to recover the costs of this from you. I will send through an
estimate of what these costs will be once I understand which payments to
Doc you would like information on.

I would also note that if you would like to receive information on the
money that the government has received in relation to the minerals
themselves (i.e. ‘royalties’), then this is collected by the Ministry for
Business Innovation and Employment (MBIE). If this is the case, please
confirm this and I will forward your request onto them for a response.

I look forward to receiving your clarification so that I can continue to
respond to your request. As noted above, the next step would be to provide
a cost estimate. If it is easier to give me a call to discuss, my phone
number is below.

Kind regards,

Rebecca

Tena Koe rebecca beaumont,

so are you saying rio tinto took lou sanson, harry mayer and mike slater under their wing out of the goodness of their hearts? How sweet of them.

I have witnessed the ineptitude and inefficiency of d.o.c paperwork activities before so I will pass on your offer to fleece me for public information.
