Dear T.H,

On Tuesday 9 July 2019, I contacted you and asked you to clarify your OIA request. We have not heard back from you to date, and thus have interpreted your request to be asking for statistics about the outcome of seized items. We do not hold this type of statistics. For this reason, that part of your request is refused on the grounds set out in section 18(g) of the Official Information Act.

You have asked us to provide you with our procedures in relation to seized items. We consider that making these procedures available publicly is likely to prejudice the security and defence of New Zealand (section 6(a) of the Official Information Act) and for that reason we refuse that part of your request.

However, we note that seized items are dealt with in accordance with the provisions of Part 8 of the Civil Aviation Act. Generally speaking, as appropriate, items are either delivered to the airline, or the Police, or are disposed of by way of distraction or a donation to a charity.

If you need anything further, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Pursuant to section 19(b) of the Official Information Act 1982, you have the right, by way of complaint under section 28(3) to an Ombudsman, to seek an investigation and review of our decision. The Ombudsman’s contact details are:
