     As part of my honours research at Victoria University Law school I
     am considering the status and protection that currently exists for
     victims of people trafficking in New Zealand.
    
     I request the following information about trafficking and smuggling
     offences under sections 98C and 98D of the Crimes Act in New
     Zealand since 2002:
    
     1. The number of prosecutions for each offence
     2. The number of investigations that have not led to a prosecution
     for each offence
     3. The number of complaints made for each offence
    
     Additionally, I request any information about Police policy on
     victims of trafficking and exploitation for Immigration purposes.
     Specifically, the number of visas granted to victims or witnesses
     of the above offences, and the procedures followed for recognising
     victims in these circumstances.

I refer to your Official Information Act request of 5 August 2013.  You
requested information about the number of prosecutions for trafficking
offences. A part of the information requested as follows is not held by
Police but is more closely associated with the activities Immigration New
Zealand. I have therefore transferred that part of your request to
Immigration New Zealand under to section 14 of the Official Information
Act 1982.

 

·         Specifically, the number of visas granted to victims or
witnesses of the above offences, and the procedures followed for
recognising victime in these circumstances

 

You have the right to complain to the Ombudsman to seek an investigation
and review of my decision if you are not satisfied with the way I have
responded to your request.

The purpose of this letter is to notify you that Police require an
extension of time in which to respond to your request, pursuant to section
15A(1)(b) of the Official Information Act 1982, because consultations
necessary to make a decision on the request are such that a proper
response to the request cannot reasonably be made within the original time
limit.

 

Police require until 27 September 2013 to provide a substantive response
to your request. 

 

You have the right to complain to the Office of the Ombudsmen about this
extension.
