Ownership and Useage of Railfreight B Shed Site, Christchurch

Patrick Dunford made this Official Information request to KiwiRail

The request was successful.

From: Patrick Dunford

Dear Kiwirail,

Following a manifesto promise made by the Labour Party in the 2017 General Election to commit funds to the establishment of a rail passenger services between Christchurch and Rolleston, various bodies are carrying out work to investigate the establishment of such services. This includes consideration of possible sites for a central city rail passenger terminal, which over time could be expanded into a full public transport interchange linking to the existing bus services.

The present terminus for long distance passenger services at Addington may not be ideally located for this as well as being too small, so other options may include a location somewhere near the former passenger station in Moorhouse Avenue. Apart from the exact site formerly occupied by this station, the former Railfreight B Shed site in Cass Street is also a possible consideration.

Please provide the following information:

1. Does Kiwirail presently retain ownership of the former Railfreight B Shed site in Cass Street, Christchurch, including the triangular shaped piece of land to the west of the B Shed building used to fan out the rail tracks to enter the building.

2. What plans if any does Kiwirail have for the future of the Railfreight B Shed site.

3. Does Kiwirail have any particular views about the suitability of the site as a suburban rail passenger service terminus as mentioned above. It is envisaged this is probably only large enough in its present form for two or three platforms and the removal of the existing B Shed building would seem likely due to age and unsuitability for adaption.

Yours faithfully

Patrick Dunford
