Please advise if there is any planning at present in relation to proposed future development of suburban passenger trains terminating at Rolleston station i.e. provision for any future suburban passenger station(s) in the Rolleston area.

Good afternoon Patrick.

KiwiRail is not currently undertaking any planning for passenger rail to Rolleston.

However you might be aware there was a decision in February this year, by Environment Canterbury (ECan) councillors to the Canterbury Regional Transport Committee to form a working group to investigate opportunities to progress passenger rail in Canterbury, focussing on the greater city area.
This work would sit within ECan at this stage, with KiwiRail getting involved later on down the track (excuse the pun).

Dear Dave Allard,

Thanks for your comment. I am writing a submission on NZTA's proposal to build a flyover over the top of the present station and I have to complete this by Friday when current consulation closes. I am more interested at the moment in whether KRL is locked into the current location of the station which I assume does not need to be the case, especially if they are hoping to add sidings in the existing yard there.

Afternoon Patrick.

The advice I have received is that while the station building presently houses signals and telecommunications equipment, we aren't fixed on the having a platform here and acknowledge that if regional rail was to happen an alternative location with better connections to different transport modes may be needed.
