Information regarding written traffic warnings (WTW's) sent to bus companies
Hugh Davenport made this Official Information request to New Zealand Police
The request was refused by New Zealand Police.
From: Hugh Davenport
Dear New Zealand Police,
I would like to request the number of WTW's sent to the following bus companies as the registered owner of a vehicle:
- Tranzurban
- NZBus
I'm happy for this to be limited to only the Wellington district, and only the year 2018. Please split this into months.
I would also be interested in the number of complaints made against buses owned by the above companies that resulted in the Police contacting the driver directly, rather than just the corporate office of the company (ie, the person who committed any alleged offence is actually told and warned).
Yours faithfully,
Hugh Davenport

Dear Hugh
I refer to your request of 2 May 2019 as below.

Dear New Zealand Police,
Thanks for that. To help making another request for this, can you please let me know what information is recorded for WTW's? I had assumed that the registered owner of a vehicle would be, but it appears not.

From: Hugh Davenport
Dear New Zealand Police,
Thanks for that. I've been told that the Police issue WTW's for reports coming in via the Community Road Watch form, and also official complaints made in person via a 1U form. In the situation where the driver's identity is not known, and only the vehicle registration, what process do the Police follow? Ie, do the Police contact the registered owner of the vehicle to determine who the driver at the time was, or do the Police simply do nothing?
If they contact the registered owner of the vehicle, where is the information of that contact stored? If there is no response from the registered owner of the vehicle, what are the Police's next steps to attempt to determine the driver of the vehicle at the time?
If there is some record of contact with registered owners of vehicles in relation to a community road watch form or an official 1U complaint, then I request the number of times the following registered owners have been contacted for that reason:
- Tranzurban
- NZBus
I'm happy for this to be limited to only the Wellington district, and only the year 2018. Please split this into months.
I would also be interested in the number of complaints made against buses owned by the above companies that resulted in the Police contacting the driver directly, rather than just the corporate office of the company (ie, the person who committed any alleged offence is actually told and warned).
