Do the new red light and speed cameras support ANPR?

Thomas Beagle (Tech Liberty) made this Official Information request to New Zealand Police

The request was successful.

From: Thomas Beagle (Tech Liberty)

Dear New Zealand Police,

The media have recently carried stories about the NZ Police evaluating and deploying new red-light and speed cameras. My questions:

1. Are the police intending to deploy any red light cameras that support automatic number plate recognition (ANPR)?

2. If so, do the police intend to use the ANPR function?

3. If so, will this be used only for cars that are detected as running a red light (or any other offence detected by the cameras) or will it be used for all cars?

4. Are the police intending to deploy any speed cameras that support ANPR?

5. If so, do the police intend to use the ANPR function?

6. If so, will this be used only for cars that are detected as speeding (or any other offence detected by the cameras) or will it be used for all cars?

Yours faithfully,

Thomas Beagle
