Request for information relating to NZ Land Army (WW2)

Natasha Wells made this Official Information request to Ministry for Primary Industries

Ministry for Primary Industries did not have the information requested.

From: Natasha Wells

Dear Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry,

I have previously worked for the New Zealand Defence Force Personnel Archives. While there, we received requests for information regarding the New Zealand Women's Land Corps/Service. As the unit had no official military status, personnel files of 'Land Girls' were not included amongst the files held at the Archives. It was unknown among the staff where such files ere held, if any existed and therefore replies to enquiries were not helpful to the enquirer. I have since endeavoured to ascertain if records regarding those who served with the NZ Women's Land Service existed and try to locate these if they have survived.

I have been in contact with NZ Defence Library and Archives NZ, yet without much luck.

Research at Archives NZ has revealed that the administration of the Land Service was transferred from the National Service Department (Man-Power Division) to the National Council of Primary Production under the Ministry of Agriculture. One particular file at Archives (ref) states two card indexes were to be created; one for women in the service looking for work, and one for farmers looking for staff. I am interested in locating these card indexes, especially the one containing cards for women in the service.

I am writing to request the following information. As the Service was in operation during World War 2, the date range will be approximately 1939 - 1945.
Confirmation of the existence of the card index and whether they were administered by the Ministry of Agriculture.
The location of these indexes (i.e. Archives NZ) with appropriate reference details.
Advice as to what, if any, restrictions apply to the information contained in the index and how might someone request access to the records.
Please be advised that information received regarding the above query will be used for my own personal research and also forwarded to NZ Defence Personnel Archives to assist them with any future enquiries regarding the NZ Women's Land Service. I may also share the finding with other interested researchers. Could you please advise if sharing this information will be unacceptable to the Ministry.

If you require clarification regarding any of the above feel free to contact me.

I look forward to your response.

Yours sincerely,
Natasha Wells

Hi,

I am interested in this information. I am trying to find out more information on my Grandmother who was a "land girl" over this time. If these cards do exist, can you please also let me know.

Thanks

Hello
I am trying to find any information about Gladys Ackroyd who was in the Land Army based in South Canterbury. Do any records exist?

Lorraine: Annotating a request here will not get a response from the government. You need to either file your own OIA, or trawl the National Archives.

Thank you to those who have been interested in my request regarding the NZ Land Army.

The reason I did not receive a response from the Ministry of Agriculture was because the Ministry was incorporated into the new Ministry of Primary Industries and therefore I suspect my request got lost in cyber-space.

I did not receive a positive reply from the Ministry of Primary Industry to my request. They had no record of the files I was looking for, nor did they have any record of the files having been transferred to Archvies NZ. I'm aware that government records management is a lot better now than it has been in the past. The records I have been trying to locate may have been transferred to Archives NZ but not recorded sufficiently to be identifiable now or they may have been purged or accidentally destroyed and not transferred to Archvies at all. However, I continue to endeavour to locate the records of the Land Girls. My search may result in finding that the records have been destroyed either by accidental loss or periodic disposal of records, however I think it will be beneficial to confirm what happened to the records regardless, and if they still exist, locate their whereabouts.

Kind regards,
Natasha Wells
Wellington, NZ.

Patrician Greenwood was my maiden name born 26 Feb 1927 in Kaiapoi and joined the NZ Womans Land Army in 1945. I worked on a sheep station in Waiau for Edgar Jones maybe 6-9 months then to a Zadbrook dairy farm until retirement. I am still fit and well and would be interested in any contacts from these early days. I do have a photo taken in the uniform gloves and all which could be posted on line if there is a means to do so?
I look forward to any response to this annotation.
Cheers

I am also interested in any information re the missing Land Army files. My mother, Moira Gibbs (nee Jago) was in the Land Army and we have a photo of her in her Land Army uniform but have been unable to find out her Land Army Number. Dianne Bardsley wrote a book called "The Land Girls in a Man's World, 1939-1946" and my mother is mentioned in this book. In the bibliography there is reference to the New Zealand National Archieves, Wellington but there seems to be no Land Army Numbers stated for any of the several hundred of women mentioned in the book.

Annotaters: this is a site for making OIA requests, not a genealogy / connections site. If you want information, you need to either file a very specific OIA request yourself, or visit the national archives. If you are trying to reconnect with people you met years ago, try old friends or something similar. Spamming your personal details across the internet is not going to help you, and may result in you becoming a victim of identity theft, so please stop doing it.

I don't agree with you Alex. This thread has more people following it, and has more annotations than any other thread on the site. If you don't like it don't read it.

I am interested in whether my Mother, Joyce Elizabeth Hughes-Sparrow was a Land Girl during WW11. Whilst my Father was away with the Army, she worked on a Farm in Glen Oroua near Palmerston North. I was looked after by my Grandmother in Ron gotta. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks
