Thanks for your official information request dated 31 January 2019 in
which you requested the following:

 

“On the NZ Police website, it states that the Mission of New Zealand
Police "is for New Zealand to be the safest country in the world." (

By what measure/benchmark of safety do NZ Police measure their progress in
this regard?

Is it the Global Peace Index, published by the Institute for Economics and
Peace?”

 

Yes, Police use the Global Peace Index (GPI) rankings, published by the
Institute for Economics and Peace as a proxy measure of New Zealand’s
peace and safety compared to others internationally. There are of course,
several other international comparators that provide a view and these are
always of interest.

 

Police’s mission of being the safest country is underpinned by a strong
commitment to making New Zealand’s homes, communities and roads safer and
we use a range of specific safety measures to monitor our progress. These
include those in the Citizen Satisfaction Survey which focus on our
citizens perceptions of safety both in neighbourhoods after dark and in
urban areas at night.
