Total number of people with a New Zealand residence status visa

Chris Clarke made this Official Information request to Department of Internal Affairs

This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for Chris Clarke to read recent responses and update the status.

From: Chris Clarke

Dear Department of Internal Affairs,

Please can you establish and advise to me, the current number of people who have NZ Permanent Residence status visas?

That is essentially my request. It may be of some use to explain that I am wondering how many people in total would have the legal right to come and stay in NZ if everyone with a passport or NZ Residence all came together. As I understand it there are actually over 5 million "New Zealanders" but it's not clear if that includes people with NZ Permanent Residence status?

I have met a few people who come to NZ for long enough to get Permanent residence and then go back to their country of origin - presumably with that status as an insurance against future world events.

Goodness I thought. So how many people might there be? Are there millions? Should we be worried?

That is the basic concern.

Yours faithfully,

Chris Clarke
