North Island eels: 2017 scientific assessment by NIWA for Fisheries NZ

Tēnā koutou Ministry for Primary Industries,

Fisheries New Zealand recently undertook public consultation on catch limits for North Island freshwater eels. The press release announcing the public consultation (Ministry for Primary Industries, Wednesday, 20 June 2018, 3:10 pm) stated the quota review was “based on a new scientific assessment by NIWA in 2017 for North Island eels”. This assessment does not appear to be available on your website. I wish to view this assessment as part of understanding the population dynamics of longfin eels and the sustainability (or otherwise) of the commercial harvesting.

Therefore I request that the Ministry releases the following information:

Any scientific assessments produced by NIWA for Fisheries NZ regarding longfin and shortfin eels (between 1 January 2017 and 30 June 2018) including any reports, draft reports, memorandums and/or letters.

Please provide this information in an electronic accessible and searchable format via email.
If any part of my request is unclear, please don't hesitate to contact me. I am also happy to discuss altering or refining my request.

As a New Zealand citizen, I am eligible to make requests under the OIA.
