Ross Sea and Fisheries

Jacob Middleton made this Official Information request to Ministry for Primary Industries

The request was successful.

From: Jacob Middleton

Dear Ministry for Primary Industries,

My Official Information Act request concerns fishing in the Ross Sea, particularly the Antarctic toothfish industry.

Between 1994 to 2016, how many fishing vessels that are registered to New Zealand annually operate in the Ross Sea and Southern Ocean? What is the weight limit for each catch?

How many foreign fishing vessels annually operate in the Ross Sea? What states operate fishing vessels in the Ross Sea? Can I please have that data broken down per annum from 1994 to 2016.

Between 1994 to 2016, what has been the annual economic gain from New Zealand's fishing within the Ross Sea and Southern Ocean? Can this information be in dollar terms and per annum.

Where specifically in the Ross Sea do New Zealand fishing vessels operate to catch the greatest yields? Does this differ per year?

Do New Zealand registered fishing vessels only catch Antarctic toothfish within the Ross Sea?

I understand that there are several parts to this Official Information request, and thank you in kind for processing this request in due course.

Please let me know if you have any further questions relating to these Official Information request.

Yours faithfully,

Jacob Middleton
