Rights of Child with Disability
Katrina Bevan made this Official Information request to Carmel Sepuloni
The request was partially successful.
From: Katrina Bevan
Dear Carmel Sepuloni,
Please release to me the advice you receive, and from whom, upon which you rely to make decisions for a child living with a disability?
What meetings, minutes, memos have you had, and with whom, since becoming Minister to understand what policy and how that policy affects directly and indirectly, an infant, child and youth with disabilities when legislation, for example in Education, is geared for a normally developing child?
What reports, advice, minutes, memos, or meetings, have you had, and from whom, upon which you rely to make decisions about implementing legislation protecting the rights of child with disability, in particular, a child with disability learning in education?
What monitoring mechanisms do you have in place or what information, policy do you rely on to ensure a child with disability is having their learning needs met while in education?
Yours faithfully,
Katrina Bevan

Dear C Sepuloni (MIN),
Thankyou for your email Hannah on behalf of Minister Sepuloni.
In answer to your question, no, education is used as an example. The question refers globally in the context of disability acts protecting rights of disabled, specifically child with disability. However, asking in a different way or in addition to the earlier questions:
What information does the Minister rely on to inform her decision in policies and strategy’s for a child living with disability and what information does she intend to use to inform other pieces of legislation to ensure, where a child with disability is also affected, their rights are upheld?
Please include the pieces of legislation that the information the Minister would use that cover rights of child with disability in NZ.
Further what information does the Minister rely on in decision making to ensure the rights because of needs of a child are protected if NZ disability legislation refers to an adult (Other than NZ participation in World Convention on rights of a child with disability)?
Yours sincerely,
Katrina Bevan
