The request was successful.

From: Lloyd Jerome

Dear Department of Conservation,

Under the OIA, I would like you to provide for me the figures you have on record (since records of this nature began) for the number of verified Kiwi deaths in the Northland region. Specifically, I would like to know the number of Kiwi that were wearing tracking devices that have died, and what cause of death was attributed in each case. I am only interested in recorded deaths, not extrapolated figures nor assumptions.

Yours faithfully,

Lloyd Jerome

Dear Lloyd,

I am managing your OIA request, and am just seeking some clarification to
ensure we meet your request adequately, as follows:

 1. My interpretation of your request is that you would like to know the
number of kiwi that were wearing tracking devices that have died, and
the probably cause of death, NOT the total number of recorded deaths
(with or without tracking devices) – please can you confirm?
 2. In order to be able to manage your request within the standard OIA
timeframe, I would like to suggest we provide records made within the
last 10 years. If we go back to when DOC started (31 years ago), we
will have to source archived materials, which will take significantly
longer, and we will almost certainly need to extend the response
timeframe. Please advise whether my suggestion will meet your
requirements.

If you would like to discuss in person, please phone me on the number
below, or provide your contact number for me to call.

Regards

Andrea

Dear Andrea Booth,

Many thanks for getting back to me so swiftly.

Here’s the clarification you’re looking for:

I’m working on the assumptions that:

1) the tagged Kiwi population is a random representation of the total population.
2) all tagged Kiwi that die are recovered from the environment, and post-mortem cause of death is established.

What I would like to know are the causes of death of these tagged birds. (Eg. natural causes, cars, dogs, drowning, poisoning etc.)

I hope these are reasonably straightforward statistics to report.

Yours sincerely,

Lloyd Jerome

Hi Lloyd,

Thanks for the clarification - that is generally the case a in terms of tagged kiwi.

In terms of timeframes, would you be happy with data from the last 10 years - this will enable us to respond to your request within the timeframe.

Regards
Andrea

Dear Shana Harding,

My grateful thanks for your help in compiling these figures.

Having read the data you have supplied, please could I ask for some more information within this query?

I would like to know the approximate age (hatchling, juvenile, adult, will be sufficient) of each of the dead Kiwi.

How many Kiwi have been transmitter-tagged in the last 10 years in Northland?

I apologise profusely that I did not ask these questions initially, but the answers will be a great help in my understanding of the total proportion of Kiwi that die every year by extrapolating the data to the entire population in our region.

Yours sincerely,

Lloyd Jerome

Hi Lloyd,

Data on age of birds as requested.

I don't currently have the figures of the total number of birds with transmitters, but this could not be used to estimate the proportion of kiwi that die in the region as the vast majority of the birds with transmitters lived in sites which were managed for predators, and which have a high level of dog control by the surrounding community. These figures do not reflect what is happening in other parts of Northland, which have much higher levels of kiwi deaths from dogs and stoats.

Cheers
Andrea
