Accommodation Supplement paid for rents paid to related parties
Alastair Robertson made this Official Information request to Ministry of Social Development
The request was partially successful.
From: Alastair Robertson
Dear Ministry of Social Development,
I would like to request under the Official Information Act the guidelines that the Ministry for Social Development uses in establishing the validity of rents paid by applicants. Also, do the guidelines require any checks to see if the rent is paid to any related party?
Also, I would like to know the number of Accommodation Supplement applications accepted for persons receiving Superannuation and who a) have a Parent Resident Visa and b) have a Parent Retirement Resident Visa, and c) the number of Accommodation Supplement applications rejected for each of those two resident visa categories..
Yours faithfully,
Alastair Robertson

Ministry of Social Development
Mr Alastair Robertson
[FOI #8041 email]
Dear Mr Robertson
On 15 June 2018 you emailed the Ministry requesting, under the Official
Information Act 1982, the following information:
1. the guidelines that the Ministry for Social Development uses in
establishing the validity of rents paid by applicants. Also, do the
guidelines require any checks to see if the rent is paid to any related
party?
2. Also, I would like to know the number of Accommodation Supplement
applications accepted for persons receiving Superannuation and who a) have
a Parent Resident Visa and b) have a Parent Retirement Resident Visa, and
c) the number of Accommodation Supplement applications rejected for each
of those two resident visa categories
The Ministry has decided to grant your request in part. The Ministry will
be responding to your first question. Regarding your second question,
information regarding the number of Accommodation Supplement applications
approved and declined for [1]superannuitant who have a Parent Resident
Visa or a Parent Retirement Resident Visa is refused under section 18(f)
of the Official Information Act as in order to provide you with this
information Ministry staff would have to manually review thousands of
files. The greater public interest is in the effective and efficient
administration of the public service.
I have considered whether the Ministry would be able to respond to your
request given extra time, or the ability to charge for the information
requested. I have concluded that, in either case, the Ministry’s ability
to undertake its work would still be prejudiced.
You will be provided with contextual information as to why we cannot
provide this information in your response. The Ministry intends to provide
you with a response by 10 August 2018.
If you wish to discuss this decision with us, please feel free to contact
[2][MSD request email]
If you are not satisfied with this decision, you have the right to seek an
investigation and review by the Ombudsman. Information about how to make a
complaint is available at [3]www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or 0800 802 602.
Yours sincerely
