How many have been killed in police car pursuits ?

Jason McIntosh made this Official Information request to New Zealand Police

The request was successful.

From: Jason McIntosh

Dear New Zealand Police,

It seems that every other week I read of another police chase fatality . Could you please list the incidences that have occurred over the last five years ? How many high speed pursuits have been recorded ? How many have been called off when considered too dangerous ? What are the rules around such events ? How many people have been injured or killed ?
How many of these were avoidable ? Have any police officers faced criminal charges in relation to these deaths ? In this age of technology and facial recognition can't the police pull back, follow them by drone or helicopter or fixed wing aircraft ? How often is it thought to be critical that the offenders are apprehended immediately ? Is the property loss or damage to the egos of the pursuing officers worth more than a human life ? Why can't most of these people be found and arrested the next day ?

Yours faithfully,

Jason McIntosh

Dear Jason McIntosh

I have been asked to let you know that Police requires an extension of
time in which to respond to your request, pursuant to section 15A(1) of
the Official Information Act 1982, because the request necessitates
consultations such that a proper response to the request cannot reasonably
be made within the original time limit.

Police require until 3 July 2018 to provide a substantive response to your
request.

You have the right to complain to the Office of the Ombudsman about this
extension.

It seems strange that NZ Police have said there have been over 15,000 fleeing driver incidents over the past five years, but Table One contains only 3,791 reasons for engaging within that period. What about the other 9,000+ incidents?

The 15,000+ figure is consistent with other information Police have released this year regarding the number of pursuits over this period.
