Dear Fire and Emergency New Zealand,
The major rural fire that has occurred over the last rural fire season (ie summer of 2017/18) would be the Makara Fire on the Chathams Island. This fire has been reported as being in excess of 3000 hectares and incurring costs of over $1,000,000. This is the second year that the Chathams has had a major rural fire event incurring significant additional costs in the 2016/17 year.
It is understood that the National Rural Fire Authority has previously undertaken independent reviews of major fires. The size and complexity of the Makara Fire would be expected to similarly come under close (and independent) expert scrutiny by FENZ. Such a review would identify what went well, what could be done better/differently and what are the learnings from the event that can be carried forward.
Under the provisions of the Official Information Act I request the following information:
1. A breakdown of the total costs incurred in suppressing the Makara Fire.
2. A copy of the formal operational review(s) undertaken of the Makara Fire.
