Official Information Act 1982 (the Act) Request

I refer to your request, made via FYI, of 12 March 2018 requesting
information concerning drones held by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

How many drones were sold in NZ last year?

The CAA does not record the number of drones sold in New Zealand last
year. As the CAA does not hold the information request your request is
refused in accordance with section 18(g) of the Act.

 

Is the CAA looking at licensing drones?

The CAA is not currently considering the licensing of drones.

 

How many people broke CAA airspace and laws in the last 12 months?

Between 13 March 2017 and 12 March 2018 there were 292 alleged breaches,
however not all of these have been proven as breaches of Civil Aviation
Rules Part 101. Occurrences involving drones can include proximity with
other aircraft, operating within 4km of an aerodrome without permission
and flying over persons or property without permission.

You have the right to make a complaint to the Ombudsman to seek an
