Joss J. made this Official Information request to Ministry for Culture and Heritage

The request was successful.

From: Joss J.

Dear Ministry for Culture and Heritage,

Hello, I hope you’ve had a good break over the Summer. I have four parts to my New Years OIA.

MCH states in a 2013 briefing (D-0521343, 2014/36) that the TVNZ Archive contains 647,000 items. However in Nga Taonga’s Briefing to the Incoming Minister 2017 it states there are only 435,000 items in the TVNZ Archive – that’s 212,000 fewer items.

1. As custodian of the TVNZ Archive collection can you please confirm the actual total number of ITEMS and the total number of HOURS held in the TVNZ Archive collection.

2. If the actual total number of items doesn’t match MCH’s 2013 figure of 647,000 items can you please provide all official information that the Ministry holds relating how/why/when the total number changed from the 2013 briefing.

3. Can you please provide me with the letter from Nga Taonga in response to Minister Barry’s Letter of Expectations 2017/18. Minister Barry asks for a response which outlines the challenges and opportunities and how the Board intends to respond to her expectations.

4. Could you please supply the four zip computer files that were emailed to the Ministry on 20 May 2014. The email is titled "FW: Archive Scanned documents", and contains a forwarded message and attachments from the Archive System Specialist at the TVNZ Archive.

Please supply the four original zip files and not just pdf versions of the contents.

For your reference the files were originally titled (but these filenames may have changed):
Seleted UnCatalogued ProgrammeTitles.zip
Dewey Film Numbers.zip
Programmes Film.zip
Scanned 15-05-2014.zip

The email describes the contents as the content held on tape and film at the TVNZ Archive.

The description goes on:
Listings of some uncatalogued programmes transferred from quad tape in 1980s to one inch and beta and some uncatalogued sports tapes
News and stock footage film items from 1970s and 1980s given a Dewey classification number
Listing of A-Z programmes that are on film
Listings from scanning project containing drama, Dunedin and Christchurch comp tapes, news ex-airs 1986-2014, A-Z programmes, rock archive, sports, stock shot footage.

Again, I hope you have had a good break and look forward to hearing from you,

Yours faithfully,

Joss J.

Dear Joss J.

Thank you for your request under the Official Information Act 1982 (OIA),
dated 3 January 2018.

The OIA requires that we advise you of our decision on your request no
later than 20 working days after the day we received your request.
Unfortunately, it will not be possible to meet that time limit and we are
therefore writing to notify you of an extension of the time to make our
decision.

This extension is necessary because consultations necessary to make a
decision on your request are such that a proper response cannot reasonably
be made within the original time limit.

This extension has been made under sections 15A(1)(b) of the OIA.  You can
expect to receive a response to your request by 27 February 2018.

You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of
this decision. Information about how to make a complaint is available at
www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or free phone 0800 802 602.

Yours sincerely
