Secondary school teachers absent from the classroom
David Whyte made this Official Information request to Ministry of Education
Ministry of Education did not have the information requested.
From: David Whyte
Dear Ministry of Education,
Official information request: Please supply the following information under the OIA
I Am after a metric around non scheduled secondary school teacher days off. That is the number of:
Sick days
Bereavement Leave
Leave without pay
Holiday days (obviously excluding the days where school is not formally teaching)
And any other category where teachers are unexpectedly not available to teach
I am wanted to benchmark a secondary school against this data. So the data I am after is across a school year, for the last complete school year that this data is available. The data to be useful is request to be in one of the following forms:
The average of these days across all NZ secondary schools
Total number of days taken across all schools (And if this is provided, the number of schools in NZ will also need to be provided)
The average of the above days per 100 teachers (or per 10, or per 1000, whatever metric may be on file).
As you can see, they exact format the data comes in, is less of a concern, than how the data can be compared to a current school.
If you need any more information from me please let me know as soon as possible.
I understand that a decision on a request for information under the OIA should be made within 20 working days of receiving that request.
Yours faithfully
David Whyte

Dear David Whyte
Thank you for your request for information below. The Ministry will consider and respond to your request in accordance with the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act).
The Act allows up to 20 working days for a response, making 16 January 2018 the latest date for our response to you. If more than 20 working days are needed due to the potential workload involved in answering your request, we will notify you accordingly.
Under the Official Information Act (see definition of “working day” in section 2), the period between 25 December – 15 January are not considered to be “working days” for the purposes of calculating the 20 working day timeframe for proving a response under the Act. Notwithstanding this, your request that the Ministry treat your request as urgent has been noted. We will endeavour to respond to your request as quickly as possible.”
Please note, the Ministry may publicly release on our website the response to your request five days after you have received it. Any personal information will be removed.
In the interim, if you have any questions about your request, please email [email address].
Thanks
