DBR Preservation

Colby James made this Official Information request to KiwiRail

The request was successful.

From: Colby James

Dear KiwiRail,
We got confirmation that all 8 DBRs are withdrawn from service, now I for one suggest we save a DBR for preservation, the resin a DBR must survive into preservation is that they used to start life as DB class thus the unrebuilt Db class neither survive one would have been saved in the 1980's but came to nothing,

I am suggesting that when the GETs closes the date of disposal of various DBR locomotives on July 17th 2017, I suggest one unit goes to preservation either the National Railway Museum at Ferrymead Historic Park, or Steam Incorporated, or any society's around New Zealand, why am I asking for DBR's well mainly because one must survive as it's of greater importance to New Zealand's Rail Heritage Committee and one would be great for preservation thus what if they decided to rebuild one back to a DB,

If you could be of any help we must suggest what must be done weather sold, scrapped, or one sold to preservation, and I would love to see a unit survive thus it's of greater importance to New Zealand Railway Heritage Collection thus no DB's that where unrebuilt survive,

Yours faithfully,

Colby James

Good afternoon Colby

Thank you for your email dated 29 June 2017, regarding the preservation of
a DBR locomotive.

Your request has been considered under the Official Information Act 1982
(“the Act”).

The DBR class are surplus to the business.  The process has started for
their disposal and KiwiRail has no plans to preserve an example of this
locomotive class.

KiwiRail’s usual process is to advertise for the disposal of the
locomotives.  In the past we have found there is often an interested buyer
amongst heritage organisations.

Under s28(3) of the Act, you have the right to seek an investigation and
review of this response by way of complaint to the Ombudsman. Refer to
[1]www.ombudsman.parliament.nz for more information.

Regards,

Official Correspondence Unit

Dear OCU,
I agree to that and understand that Kiwi Rail is a profitable company I agree and also I understand in regards to the DBR class but thanks for telling me all the info, now another regardful question is?

After the tenders where closed on 17th July 2017 okay has they're been a buyer for them or are they're to be sold did anyone state their status?

And third question when I asked John Peterson before he told me the only way to preserve one is if they're was talks on disposal like if it's not to run, I can respect your quarrel's and terms Kiwi Rail and I understand and respect that, plus yes only preservation can happen but if like you did before to the English Electrics or the Ganz Mavag's where some D/DM class where saved, and one Ganz to Ferrymead was,

Plus I know you have a business to run Kiwi Rail but someday prior to the future they're may come a time where historical generations must save stock, not all of it but like the reason that like I told you before DBR's must survive generations because like I perhaps told you no DB's that where unrebuilt survive and yeah you could say we have unrebuilt DA's six in preservation but yes I respect that too, ;)

Maybe in the future you never know if they're and we don't know how many years it could take perhaps in years it could happen but it might or might never happen, and once again thank you Kiwi Rail for the inquiry and I respect your terms. :)

Yours sincerely,

Colby James

Good afternoon Colby

Thank you for your email dated 29 July 2017.

After the tenders closed on 17 July 2017 KiwiRail received a large amount of interest in the purchase of the eight DBR locomotives however, negotiations are yet to be concluded so the status of each one is unknown.
