Hi Katie,

I don’t think an answer to this question is possible with our datasets.
Can you please check if we can answer this?

If we don’t have the data is there something in Stats NZ we could direct
this person to?

Dear Katie Sadetskaya,
Given that your department does not have this information, nor is it available on the Statistic website, could you please forward my request to Minister of Finance who has publicly quoted similar figures pertaining to my request i.e. the average NZ wage has increased by $12,000 since 2008.

Clearly Minister Joyce has the figures I request in order for him to have made such a statement.

Yours sincerely,

Suzanne Newton

Hi Suzanne,

I asked our OIA person to forward your request to the Treasury as it is about what the Minister Joyce has said. I think what Minister Joyce has referred to was the average weekly income from salaries and wages (multiplied by 52 weeks to get annual figure), please see attached the data from Stats NZ. However, what you have requested is the number of people whose incomes have increased - this would have to be extracted from the unit record data, and is not publicly available, only upon a specific data request from Stats NZ as they are the primary holders of the data.

Cheers,

Ngā mihi

Dear Katie Sadetskaya,

Thanks for your speedy reply.
I am fully aware of the figures Steven Joyce used, however they are somewhat misleading to many and therefore I am trying to establish just how many people are actually benefiting from a $12,000 increase in income. Hopefully Statistics will be able to assist.

Yours sincerely,

Suzanne Newton

Attachment LEED Median Earnings by Year 2008 2015.xlsx
16K Download View as HTML

Dear Ms Newton,

Thanks for your email requesting the number and percentage of New Zealanders whose earnings have increase by $12,000 etc.

Stats NZ have looked into the possibility of getting the number and percentage of New Zealanders whose incomes have increased by $12,000 or more / less than $3,000 / more than $90,000 / excess of $500,000 per annum, since 2008.

Stats NZ has a number of income related data sources (NZ Income Survey - NZIS, Household Economic Survey - HES, Link Employer Employee Data - LEED) though it is not possible to get the number and percentage of New Zealanders whose incomes have increased by $12,000 or more / less than $3,000 / more than $90,000 / excess of $500,000 by year because these sample surveys and Tax data do not have continuous (longitudinal) income data of individuals to calculate those figures.

Stats NZ publishes annual median earnings by main income source using LEED data (Tax data) and this gives an idea of how median earnings change every year. The spreadsheet attached here shows the annual percentage changes by year (2008 – 2015) for total earnings, wages and salaries and self-employment. Also, if you refer to the link in the table, further breakdowns are available, including median earnings by age, gender, region and industry.

It is important to note that the LEED data does not cover all possible income sources for New Zealanders. It includes incomes that have had tax deducted at source – specifically, incomes that are paid or transferred through the Employer Monthly Schedules, and self-employment income reported through annual tax returns.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Stats NZ at [email address].
