Kia ora Paul,

On Monday 24 June, you submitted an Official Information Act request to Minister Upston asking for “any information about the 2024 child poverty rate and any advice you have received about the increase in child poverty”. Please note that due to the time it takes for Stats NZ to collect and report on child poverty data, the full child poverty rates for 2024 (covering the 2023/24 and 2024/25 financial years) will not be available until early 2026.

The most current child poverty rates, published by Stats NZ in February 2024, are the child poverty rates for the 2022/23 financial year and they are available currently on Stats NZ’s website. These child poverty rates reflected an increase in child poverty on all three measured rates.

The Minister would like to clarify if your Official Information Act request refers to the most recent child poverty rates published in 2024 (for the 2022/23 financial year)? And if so, the Minister would like to confirm that you are seeking advice received by the Minister about the increase in child poverty that was reflected in the child poverty rates published in February 2024?

Ngâ mihi,

Office of Hon Louise Upston | MP for Taupô
Minister for Social Development and Employment
Minister for the Community and Voluntary Sector
