Please provide information about the AIS capabilities of Maritime New Zealand (and, by extension, the Rescue Coordination Centre). This may include information such as coverage / range and other similarly available technical information.
Also, does Maritime New Zealand intend to expose the information gained from the reception of these AIS signals to the public (i.e. in the form of a website or API) given the public safety benefit that may be gained and the current Government focus towards "Open Data" and "Transparency" initiatives?

Thank you for your Official Information Act request, dated 22 April 2017,
for the following information:
"Please provide information about the AIS capabilities of Maritime New

We will respond to your request in accordance with the Official
Information Act. We will notify you of the decision on your request as
soon as possible, and in any case no later than 22 May 2017, being 20
working days after the day your request was received. If we are not able
to respond to your request by 22 May 2017, we will notify you of an
extension to that timeframe.

I am concerned to hear of that, Foiler. I would strongly encourage you to make a complaint at http://www.maritimenz.govt.nz/report-onl... or directly to the Port Company responsible, especially given recent news reports that a Pilot Vessel may have killed a swimmer.

If Maritime NZ do have AIS data (and they ought to!), then there should be no need to register an incident as they would already know about the transgression?
And if Maritime NZ share the AIS data as you suggest then I think we would see a dramatic improvement in safety by exposing the behaviour of commercial operators in and around the busy Auckland Harbour.

While they would have the data monitored for rescue purposes it is quite another to use this information for enforcement purposes.
I suspect it would require quite a substantial redesign of the system to actually calculate the distance from shore to a vessel and to then enforce the regulations against these operators.
For quite some time now MNZ would appear to have been quite lacking in the enforcement of said breaches. They appear to rely on self-reporting for the most part.
While I agree on your latter statement, it is already currently possible to view most vessels online using freely available websites which rely on individuals receiving AIS signals.
The reason for my request is to get access to the data that MNZ can see as they are much more likely to have a greater coverage area of Wider NZ and the information would be more "available" (uptime).

Great question. Also what about radar data?
https://www.marinetraffic.com/ shows the Pilot Vessel Akarana passing North Head typically 300-400m off shore, but I was surprised to see that today they were doing 25 knots less than 200m off the end of the container wharf. Is that area a ski lane or what?
